Sophie Ashby's transformative work on a unique Guernsey family home showcases her innovative approach to interior design, blending African influences with a contemporary aesthetic. By adding a wraparound veranda and expansive glazing, she maximizes the stunning views, while repurposing underutilized spaces. The ground floor's large kitchen remains intact, but with added breathing room. An extension at the back introduces a porch and an extra bedroom, while the main bedroom is relocated, creating space for a dressing room and en-suite bathroom.
Ashby's personal connection to Africa, stemming from her upbringing between Cape Town and England, and her passion for contemporary African art, played a pivotal role in the design process. The owners' commitment to conservation and philanthropy, along with their frequent visits to Botswana, further inspired the African-inspired palette. From the main bedroom's boxy yellow sofa, embroidered with African proteas, to the sitting room's striated ceiling hand-painted by Meg Boscawen, the house exudes a nod to sunrise. The colors chosen for the room were inspired by Anne Griffiths' paintings, which frame the doors leading to the kitchen and dining area.
Art is a central theme throughout the house, with a mix of existing and new pieces. Amber Moir's works hang above the bed in the main bedroom, while Adam Birch's sculptural carved seat adds a striking element to the bathroom. The dressing room's wardrobe doors, hand-embroidered by Sow Studio, recreate a favorite photograph. In the dining area, Sister by Studio Ashby's hand-dyed and hand-spun rug, inspired by Sophie's own photograph, offers an abstract twist. Even the kitchen's bar stools, designed by Anna Karlin, are works of art, with backrests crafted from playful wrought iron.
Ashby's attention to detail and her ability to weave art into every corner of the house demonstrate her expertise. Her unique approach to interior design, combining personal connections with a keen eye for aesthetics, results in a captivating and cohesive space that truly reflects the owners' tastes and the beauty of Africa.
