Otway Elementary closed its doors in 1994, a decision driven by consolidation. Since then, the building has stood empty, its windows falling out, and its walls slowly collapsing. Mayor Denise Rose describes it as a public hazard, a place where mischievous kids could easily get hurt.
However, amidst the decay, a glimmer of hope remained. The gym at the rear of the structure was transformed into a vibrant community center three years ago by Redbird Community Connection. This group, dedicated to the area's improvement, saw the potential in this space. Today, it hosts reunions, weddings, and birthday parties, bringing the community together.
Revitalization and Beyond
The community's efforts haven't gone unnoticed. A $420,000 state grant has been secured to demolish the unsafe parts of the school, a decision that Mayor Rose believes will open doors for future development.
"We're excited about the possibilities," Rose said. "This is a chance to create something new and meaningful for our community."
The plan is to expand the community center and create more parking space. Rhonda Ross, from Redbird Community Connection, emphasizes the importance of such community hubs: "It's crucial to have spaces where people can gather and celebrate."
But the vision doesn't stop there. The mayor and the community hope to add a senior center, attached to the gym, creating an inclusive space for all ages.
